Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage
20 April, 2007

April is a major holiday season in Sri Lanka, with a long school break, and the celebration of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, the biggest holiday of the year.  Many of our Wattegama children go away to their relatives' homes during the holidays, but for those without relatives who remain behind, the "holiday" can be a long and melancholy time.  Thanks again to the generosity and care of our friend Mr. Rusi Captain right here in Sri Lanka, our Wattegama kids had a delightful holiday season this year.  Besides his time spent with the children at the home, Mr. Captain also provided for a New Year's holiday party and dinner for them, followed a few days later by an excursion to Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage, a favourite place for our kids.

Pinnewala Elephant orphanage is a refuge for wild elephants who have been injured or who's natural environment has been too much encroached on.  It is a large zoo-like environment in beautiful surrounds, and the favourite event is to watch the elephants march to their daily bath in the river.

Our children left the home by bus in the morning, eating a special breakfast on the way, and otherwise singing non-stop. After the two-hour ride to Pinnewala, the children wandered the facility and watched the elephants bathe.  In the afternoon, they piled back on the bus to Wattegama, stopping half-way at the beautiful grounds of Piradeniya University where they enjoyed a special lunch and a walk around the spacious grounds.  Below are a few photos to share the day with you.  Enjoy! -and thanks again to Mr. Captain for your continued care for these very deserving children!
