Easter Creatively,
liaison Jenn arranged for most of the preparatory work to be done by the
children in our Roma "Mahalata" program. These are
children who are fortunate enough to have families, though living in
impoverished conditions and assisted by OSI to assure that their
educational needs are met. Our Mahalata kids met in Dupnitza on
Friday for a fun-filled afternoon of snacks and egg painting, and eagerly
assisted in all the preparations for an Easter feast for our
less-fortunate Slatino kids. On Saturday, all of our Mahalata
children and many of their family members traveled by bus to Slatino to
deliver all of the Easter fixings and to spend a fun-filled day of
football (soccer), frizbee, and Bulgarian "horo" dancing with
our Slatino kids. On Sunday, our Slatino kids were on their own, but
were plenty occupied with the huge Easter feast that had been brought to
them the day before. Below are a few

Easter is a major holiday in
Bulgaria, centered on a traditional feast of lamb, traditional Easter "kozunak"
sweet bread, and eggs painted in warm colors to wish good health. Traditionally
a family holiday, Easter can thus be a gloomy time for our kids in the
orphanage. Thanks to Dimitar Haralambov, a Bulgarian now living in
Canada, this year we were able to provide a memorable and fun-filled
weekend and huge holiday feast for our Slatino kids.
