It is a frightening statistic that over a half of the world's population lives in poverty.  And where this occurs, nowhere are its effects more evident than in the local orphan populations.  With families struggling for survival, child abandonment, abuse, and neglect force many children into the streets, creating a growing population of "social orphans."  State orphanage systems, themselves lacking in financial resources, are simply unable to provide for the growing needs of a growing orphan population.  As a result, basic physical and emotional needs of such children are not sufficiently met.
